Shah Rukh Khan accused of insult to Islam in USA

[Saturday, June 20 2009, 18:24 BST]

Shah Rukh Khan’s recent comments on Islam will be investigated by police in India.

According to the Muslim group the Mumbai Aman Committee, the actor insulted Mohammed in a recent interview with Time N' Style magazine.

The group filed a complaint calling for an investigation into the matter, describing the offence as an "intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace".

Khan issued a statement from Los Angeles where he is shooting the drama My Name is Khan.

He said: "If they have seen my interviews about Islam and the Prophet, they should know that it is a writing error and not a thought or view I believe in.

"For all practical purposes... Prophet Mohammed is the most important positive figure in Islam."

Following the terrorist attacks in India in November, the Muslim actor spoke out against the idea that Islam is a violent religion. My Name is Khan tackles prejudice against Muslims after 9/11.

Dr Deepak Purohit wrote to Presidents about Swine Flu (MUST READ)

PLEASE GO THROUGH THIS

My dear Presidents,

I agree with you that swine flu awareness is needed, but there is no
need to be panicky and join the publicity propaganda carried out by
media and others which acts as a vehicle to spread misconception than
to spread scientific information.

These are few facts about swine flu when discussed with the leading
epidemiologists.

1) Swine flu, that is H1N1 flu is not new, first detected in 1987

2) Infective stage of flue is 5 days, 1 day before and 4 days after
onset of symptoms

3) The best way to prevent it spreading is asking patient having
symptoms of flu like fever cough and running nose to take rest at home
for 4 days so he does not transmit it

4) Masks are of limited value if any, in this disease, it can spread
through droplets on your skin, through contact etc, and I have seen
that the masks in Pune are worn as fashion statement, while walking on
road today morning I saw people wearing masks coming out for a morning
walk with their dogs!, many wearing masks around their necks, and so
on, infect these masks shall act as the vehicles to carry the virus,
instead, avoiding crowded places or cinema halls or malls where air
conditioners are on, is advisable, because you get recalculated air,
where the virus density multiplies

5)Death after H1N1 flu is not common, infect infections like measles
is taking toll of thousands more every year, and we are oblivious of
the facts. Swine flu is being blown out of proportion by media trying
to create hysteria among lay people.

6) Fever accompanied by respiratory distress, should be immediately
notified which is likely to be a complication of H1N1 flu

7)The mortality is less than .01 percent of those affected, that means
may be one in 10,000 affected is likely to suffer the life loss.

8) If you remember, 2 years ago SARS was blown out of proportion, what
happened? Humans develop immunity to the virus, the same is going to
happen, we develop immunity in due course of time, the virus is in the
air, you can not stop it, our body is already developing the immunity
so nothing to panic..

We need to take care of children and elderly who have less immunity
and do not let them go to crowded places that are all.

WE MUST START THIS CAMPAIGN OF NOT TO BE AFRAID OF THIS FLU AND LET
YOUR DAILY WORK CONTINUE AS NORMAL, NO MASKS FOR ORDINARY CITIZENS,
HEALTH CARE WORKERS OR SPECIFIC EXPOSED TO LOT OF CROWDED ENVIRONMENTS MAY BE BENEFITED, NOT PROVED.

I am amazed to hear that people are selling masks of RS 20 each which
are available to less than Rupee 1 in the market.
See who is getting benefited?

Please spread the scientific info, do not join the band wagon and
stick to science, that should be the order of the day.

Swine Flu Latest Updates for India

Two Things in Your Home Can Reduce Swine Flu Infection by 30%

You may be getting concerned at the news of the swine flu virus spreading rapidly throughout the country. There have been around 280 confirmed cases of swine flu in India as of 17th July.

It is important to understand how swine flu or for that matter any flu spreads. Contrary to the popular belief, swine flu is not air borne. The two main ways it spreads: first if someone who's infected sneezes or coughs and you come in contact with the virus in the air. The other is if you touch an object which may have have the virus and you touch your eyes, mouth or nose.

It's common for people to touch their nose, eyes and mouth. Most of these actions are sub-conscious like licking your tongue for flipping pages of a book or a magazine. As soon as you feel an itch you immediately rub or scratch your eyes.

Remember the virus can be anywhere - a door knob, a remote control, phones, computer keyboards, etc. The idea is not to get paranoid and stop using them. A simple task can protect you from infection.

Two things in your home - soap and water can reduce the chance of infection by 30%. All you need to do is keep washing your hand with soap and water frequently. And most importantly, stop touching your face. Make it a conscious effort to observe and stop. Another side effect of not touching your face too often - your skin looks better!

What is Swine Flu?

Swine flu is an infection caused by a virus. It's named for a virus that pigs can affect pigs. People usually do not get swine flu, but human infections can and do happen. The virus is contagious and can spread from human to human. Symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.

Swine flu also known as swine influenza, hog flu and pig flu. In 2009 the media labeled as "swine flu" the flu caused by 2009's new strain of swine-origin A/H1N1 pandemic virus just as it had earlier dubbed as "avian flu" flu caused by the recent Asian-linage HPAI (High Pathogenic Avian Influenza) H5N1 strain that is still endemic in many wild bird species in several countries.

Swine flu is a new influenza virus causing illness in people. This new virus was first detected in people in the United States in April 2009. Other countries, including Mexico and Canada, have reported people sick with this new virus. This virus is spreading from person-to-person, probably in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread.

Although symptoms have generally proved mild, a small number of patients will develop more serious illness. Many of these people have other underlying health conditions, such as heart or lung disease, that put them at increased risk.

On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) signaled that a global pandemic of novel influenza A (H1N1) was underway by raising the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 6. This action was a reflection of the spread of the new H1N1 virus, not the severity of illness caused by the virus. At the time, more than 70 countries had reported cases of novel influenza A (H1N1) infection and there were ongoing community level outbreaks of novel H1N1 in multiple parts of the world.

6 Ways to Protect yourself from Swine flu

Taking good care of your health can reduce or eliminate your risk of contracting the flu. The key is to keep your immune system strong by following these simple guidelines.

Lose Weight: New data has suggested that obesity, especially extreme obesity (BMI over 40), raises swine flu victims' chance of dying. The study, published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, looked at the cases of swine flu patients at a Michigan hospital, all of whom had to be placed on ventilators due to the severity of their illness. Being overweight reduces your immunity and therefore chances of contraction increases while recovery too becomes difficult.

Exercise: Blood circulation is required for your immune system to perform at its best for you. Spend 20-30 minutes daily by raising your heart beat to 130 beats per minute. Any form of exercise - running, weight training, playing sports like squash, tennis help.

Eliminate Sugar From your Diet: Apart from a number of health problems like cancer, sugar is also responsible for faster aging and reducing your immunity against diseases. Avoid all forms of white sugar starting today.

Stop Junk Food: Similar to Sugar, junk food has an immediate, weakening effect on your immune system.

Get Plenty of Sleep: Too little sleep may reduce levels of leptin, possibly causing people to gain weight, develop diabetes, and weaken your immune system. Getting around 7 hours of good quality sleep is sufficient. Note that excessive sleeping too is dangerous to your health.

Relax: If you feel overwhelmed by stress, your body will not have the reserves it needs to fight infection. Long-term stress causes excessive wear on the body and activates a deterioration of the immune system.

First Swine Flu Death in India

The girl named Riya Shiekh died at a private hospital in Pune on Monday, 3rd August. She was on a ventilator in an ICU for a number of days.

Pune has recorded the most number of cases of Swine Flu in India. India now has over 551 confirmed cases of swine flu out of which 422 have been cured and discharged. However there have been a number of cases where the virus has reappeared in patients. Statistics have revealed that the children below the age of 15 are more susceptible to the virus.

Important general good health practice on Swine Flu

You may be aware the media has reported cases of Swine Flu outbreaks in India as well, where the state of Maharashtra (India), has invoked the Epidemic Diseases Act in the city of Pune (India) as a precaution. Please read the attached “Swine Flu Advisory” which provides links to latest information on reported cases, travel alerts as well as health and safety precautions.

As a general good health practice, all Associates should:

* Maintain good personal hygiene. Wash your hands frequently. Avoid touching your face. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

* Cover coughs and sneezes with a mask or a tissue. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing by infected people.

* Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
* Avoid people who are obviously sick.
* Stay at home if you are unwell.

· People who have not had an annual flu vaccination should consider having one to prevent regular seasonal flu.

If you feel you or your children have developed flu-like symptoms, please take the following steps immediately:
· Inform your Line Manager & Talent Manager immediately
· Undertake precautionary quarantine as soon as symptoms develop & until 48 hours after symptoms recede
· Volunteer for a thorough ‘Flu Check’ at an authorized hospitals, Clinics, or Doctors (Flu specialists)
· Follow the doctor’s advice and do not administer self medication
